Stud Services
As well as a natural covering service Glenwood Stud International offers Artificial Insemination (AI) for mares on site and send semen from our stallions across the UK, Ireland and other EU Countries. We have a padded crush for AI and scanning with an enclosed foal area in front. This is a great safety aspect whilst working with the mare and foal so they are both kept safe but not separated which is less stressful.
Artificial Insemination

-
AI provides the mare with the minimum risk of infection.
-
Mares can be inseminated with semen from bigger/smaller stallions
-
No danger from covering for stallion, mare of handler
-
Mares are scanned and inseminated at the optimum time for conception.
-
If you are too far away to travel your mare (and perhaps foal)
-
If your mare doesn't travel well or frets away from home
-
If your vet advises you not to have her covered naturally for whatever reason e.g. injury, pooling fluid etc.
We have an onsite laboratory for analysing and evaluating semen either taken on site or imported in from other sources. It is important to know that the semen is of good enough quality prior to insemination.
Rob Williams owner/manager of Glenwood is a fully Qualified & experienced AI technician approved by DEFRA after consultation with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RVCS). If you would like AI as an option for your mare it is available to you - please call us for more details we will be happy to help.
Natural Covering
The process of natural covering at Glenwood is undertaken with the safety of the mare, stallion and people being of paramount importance. Hygiene is also high on the list, the mares are cleaned and washed off and their tails are fully bandaged. The mare will then have covering boots put on so that she cannot damage the stallion.
If a problem arises with the mare, i.e. she has an injury of some sort and can't take the weight of the stallion or as some mares do will not show to the stallion that she is in season, or will not stand to be covered then we will contact the owner as the option is there to go down the Artificial Insemination (AI) route which will be far less stressful for her.
